What a treat it was for our Apis team to hear fantastic external guest speaker, Joanna Richards present at a recent Professional Development Breakfast!

Joanna is a gender consultant and current PhD candidate in Virginia Haussegger’s ‘50/50 by 2030 Foundation’ – a bold new gender equality initiative established by UC’s Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis.  A passionate researcher and women’s advocate, Jo has worked with a diverse range of businesses across the private and public sectors.  Most recently, she worked with the Federal Government to develop a Gender Advocacy Toolkit for the Australian Labor Party.  A winner of the Telstra Business Woman’s award for her work in the start-up sector, Joanna also works across the arts and entertainment industries.  She has been featured in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, Radio National, Triple J Hack, ABC News and many more.

Jo’s discussion Unpacking Equality: Explaining the Arguments For and Against Equity Measures encompassed:

  • How ‘Unconscious Bias’ affects gender equity;
  • Arguments for and against Quotas and Affirmative Action;
  • Using statistics meaningfully; and
  • What measures work in the Australian Government context.

We would like to thank Joanna for her excellent presentation and taking us on an insightful and thought-provoking journey.
